Job Description
Three (3) Diversity Education & Training Managers will be hired.

The Diversity Education & Training Managers will collectively constitute a new diversity education team at Boston University (BU). This diversity education team is a joint initiative between BU Diversity & Inclusion (BU D&I) in the Office of the Provost and Organizational Development and Learning (OD&L) in Human Resources. This specialized team will work collectively to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion at BU by developing, delivering, and scaling training and programs that meet the learning needs of faculty, staff, and students across the university. As such, BU D&I and OD&L will hire three mission-driven managers who thrive on collaboration and share a deep commitment to creating a culture of inclusion, equity, and belonging across a large university.

Because the role of Diversity Education & Training Manager is a people-facing role, these will be primarily on-site positions with the potential for some flexibility.

Candidates should indicate in their cover letters a preference to be considered for one of the two hiring tracks described below. Expressing a preference for one Track does not exclude a candidate from consideration for the other Track. A candidate with the appropriate experience could be hired into either Track.

Track 1: Diversity Education & Training Manager within BU D&I (Two Openings)

The BU D&I team provides leadership and strategic direction to advance the work of diversity and inclusion across the BU community and bring the stated values of community, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging articulated in BU's 2030 strategic plan into alignment with the university's policies, practices, structures, climate, and culture. Reporting to the Director of Educational Programming Initiatives, these two Diversity Education & Training Managers will primarily support and lead the design and delivery of training programs, webinars, workshops, presentations, digital learning modules, toolkits, curricula, and other learning strategies for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In addition, as part of the diversity education manager team, they will be responsible for scaling diversity education needs throughout the entire university.

The successful candidates in this role will have a few specific responsibilities (in addition to all responsibilities listed for both tracks below):
  • In addition to training, the successful candidate will support the coordination and logistics of campus-wide programming, including panel events, community forums, keynotes, crisis response, and other forms of engagement
  • Management of student employees


Track 2: Diversity Education & Training Manager within OD&L (One Opening)

The Organizational Development & Learning (OD&L) team leads comprehensive workforce and talent development for the university's academic and administrative functions, bringing a holistic approach to creating conditions for thriving and professional success. Bringing a human-centered lens to design structures, processes, and systems, the OD&L team provides career development for staff and faculty leaders and comprehensive organizational development consultation and support to departments. Reporting to the Senior Manager Leadership Development, the Diversity Education & Training Manager under the OD&L track will lead the design and delivery of skill-based in-person, virtual, and self-paced learning focused on diversity, equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Additionally, the Diversity Education & Training Manager will provide bring demonstrated experience in providing consultation on all current and future OD&L programming, including leadership development programs, ensuring integrated DEI practices, processes, and behaviors as they impact the work of staff.

Responsibilities (both tracks):
  • Understanding the current and evolving learning needs of BU community members regarding diversity and inclusion within the context of a predominantly white research institution
  • Designing and implementing research-based learning programs and courses on topics such as intersectionality, positionality, social and racial justice, inclusive and equitable leadership practices, systemic racism, implicit and explicit bias allyship with equity-deserving communities, and other topics that support BU community members to align with institutional DEI goals
  • Facilitating trainings and other interventions that support and challenge learners to develop and apply equity-based practices
  • Evaluating programmatic and training outcomes using assessment tools such as surveys and focus groups
  • Innovating and scaling educational opportunities across Boston University through new initiatives and partnerships that reach all corners of the university with the goal of shifting the institutional culture
  • Providing consultation to schools, colleges, and departments based on specific needs and goals related to inclusive and equitable practices, working in partnership with diversity practitioners and working groups across the University
  • Managing multiple workstreams of educational programming development
  • Performing other related duties as assigned


Required Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in any field and 5-8 years of work experience in a field related to diversity education
  • 3-5 years of experience in diversity education, which may include curriculum development and/or program management
  • Strong project and program management skills
  • Proven ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and move ideas from concept to execution
  • Breadth and depth of experience affirming marginalized communities, including Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), first-gen, LGBTQIA+, and disability communities
  • Demonstrated experience in training and group facilitation on issues of diversity and inclusion in educational settings, with a strong ability to facilitate and present content to a broad range of faculty, staff, and/or students
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of diverse constituents
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience handling confidential matters with sensitivity and respect
  • Willingness to be responsive and flexible to competing or shifting demands
  • Comfort using digital tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook, Teams), WordPress, and Eventbrite and maintaining website content as needed


Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience with the complexities of working in large, hierarchical, and siloed organizations
  • Experience with faculty, staff, and/or students in training and coaching environments is preferred
  • Content design of compelling and interactive digital training modules is desirable
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills for developing and managing multiple workstreams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in working with colleagues at all levels
